Board hears draft generative-AI policy and K–5 screen-time guidance; staff to hold public presentation

The board’s policy committee reported work on a new generative-artificial-intelligence policy and elementary screen-time guidance, saying the committee reviewed survey responses and teacher/parent focus-group input. The policy was introduced as Policy 23-65 and will be developed with staged professional development and classroom guidance.
A policy committee member summarized the committee’s approach: the district sent a survey to the community and summarized those results for staff and parent focus groups. The stated intent is to teach students how to use AI tools appropriately, to avoid overreliance on generative systems for student work, and to provide professional development and guidance for staff before the policy is finalized.
"We're very aware of screen free time is valued by everybody," the committee member said while describing K–5 screen-time recommendations and a plan to tailor guidance by grade level. Staff also indicated the district will share the elementary screen-time study and guidance more broadly prior to the policy’s first reading.
Staff (S7) said they will hold a public presentation during a board meeting to collect community input before the policy goes to first and second readings, with an objective of having the policy approved by the start of the school year. The board agreed the public presentation will allow community input during public comment before first reading.
