Grades 7–8 to visit Quassy May 15 for hands‑on math and science

Mrs. Amaral, a math coach, said students in grades 7 and 8 will travel to Quassy on Friday, May 15 for a day of math and science experiences that link classroom work to real‑world observations. "It is my favorite day of the year," Amaral said, describing students working from 9:30 a.m. to noon on data collection, hypothesis development, use of accelerometers and graphing before enjoying the park.
She gave logistics for families: drop‑off should occur between 7:00 and 7:10 a.m., buses will call students at about 7:20 a.m., and staff will do a security and bag check before boarding. Phones may be brought for the bus ride but will be locked on the buses during park activities. Teachers, an administrator, related service staff and the school nurse will accompany students at Quassy.
Amaral said the morning is focused on completing a packet of math and science tasks — including timing observations, identifying variables and designing data tables — which students then analyze and use to construct explanations and calculations tied to classroom learning.
The moderator thanked Amaral and the staff for planning and reminded families about appropriate clothing (sneakers) and what students should bring (pencil, sealed disposable or empty refillable water bottle, small drawstring backpack).
