At a short special meeting, the Curry County Board of Commissioners sought consensus to defer formal approval of a proposed supplemental budget and instead send the proposal and an accompanying resolution to the budget committee for review before a final vote, officials said.
Staff member: "What I'm asking this board to consider is, that instead of doing an approval today, here and now, that we review it, we provide consensus if we believe it's appropriate moving forward, and then we present it at budget next week with our entire budget committee," a staff member told the board, adding that a resolution would accompany the supplemental budget when it is circulated.
Why it matters: Supplemental budgets amend the current fiscal plan and, if approved, change how county funds are allocated. The staff member clarified that supplemental budgets require approval by the Board of Commissioners (BOC) but do not strictly require a separate budget committee vote; nevertheless, staff recommended sending the document to the budget committee as a courtesy so members can review and raise questions ahead of the BOC vote.
What happened: A committee member said there were "mechanical things" they wanted clarified with staff before final approval. The staff member said the materials will be distributed to the rest of the budget committee once the present board indicated consensus. Board members confirmed the next budget meeting is "the twelfth" at 9:00 a.m., and the staff member said the BOC will make a formal decision then.
Direct outcomes: No formal motion or vote took place at the special meeting. Instead, the board signaled consensus to move the supplemental budget forward for committee review and to bring a resolution and the proposal back to the BOC for a formal vote at the scheduled meeting. The chair adjourned the meeting at 10:04.
What’s next: Staff will send the supplemental budget and accompanying resolution to the budget committee for review; the BOC is scheduled to consider and vote on the item at its next meeting on the twelfth at 9:00 a.m.
