The Alameda County Board of Supervisors adopted a proclamation recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month during its Oct. 28 meeting.
Supervisor Vallejo introduced the item and welcomed Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O'Malley to describe local efforts. O'Malley recounted the county’s Family Justice Center (created in 2004) and said the county has significantly reduced domestic-violence fatalities from a high in the late 1990s; she noted that while any death is too many, there were three domestic-violence-related deaths reported in the prior year.
O'Malley highlighted services that the county and partners provide to survivors and children who witness violence, and she thanked staff and partner organizations for outreach and public-awareness work. The board recorded appreciation for the district attorney and the Family Justice Center’s programs.
A motion to adopt the proclamation was moved and seconded and passed (recorded as 4 ayes, 1 excused).
