Commission has no concerns on two EGLE dock notices; defers countywide data center guidance

The Charlevoix County Planning Commission on April 9 reviewed two public notices for Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) shoreline permits and indicated it had no concerns for either proposed dock project.
Planning Director Kiersten Stark introduced a permit from Tim Forell for a modified permanent dock on Lake Charlevoix in Eveline Township that would add a U-shaped section and a 20-by-24-foot boat hoist to accommodate a 56-foot vessel. Mike Ritter moved that the commission had no concerns with the Forell public notice; Marshal Bakker seconded and the motion carried on a voice vote with Commissioner Matt Cunningham recused from the discussion and vote.
K. Stark also introduced a public notice from 309 Belvedere LLC (Edward Ascione) for a 60-foot floating dock and two timber piles on Round Lake in the City of Charlevoix. Pam Grassmick moved that the commission had no concerns; Mike Ritter seconded and the motion carried (Cunningham remained recused for the item and returned to his seat afterward).
On an unrelated item under unfinished business, audience member Betty Henne asked whether staff had sent a countywide letter to townships regarding data centers. Kiersten Stark said no and that the commission had not directed staff to send such a letter. Commissioners discussed waiting until an MSU Extension Master Citizen Planner webinar on data centers is held in June for additional information; Sherm Chamberlain added that the state legislature is considering a possible moratorium on data centers to allow local units time to research land-use responses. No county-level letter was sent at this meeting.
All three procedural motions were passed by voice vote.
