Hancock County commissioners authorize submission of five properties for state demolition grant and approve related contracts

The Hancock County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously April 28 to submit five properties for consideration under the Ohio Department of Development PY2026 Building Demolition and Site Revitalization grant and to approve several related contracts.
Phil Johnson, a presenter to the board, said the submission requires temporary access and consent‑to‑demolition forms for the listed properties and emphasized the county would not be using local funds for the program. "This program does not require any county funds to be used," he said.
Separately, the board approved an annual administrative agreement with the Hancock Regional Planning Commission to administer the county's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) programs for calendar years 2026 and 2027; Johnson said administration fees are paid from grant funds. The board also approved a one‑year agreement (with an automatic second‑year extension) with Findlay Hope House for Fair Housing Services for 2026–2027.
The commissioners authorized a $27,650 contract with H & H Environmental LLC to provide asbestos inspections, testing and survey reports for seven buildings in Findlay, McComb and Bluffton tied to an earlier (PY2024) demolition round. They also approved a $59,665 contract with Big Iron Construction LLC to demolish nine listed properties in Findlay, Mt. Blanchard, Van Buren, Mt. Cory, Rawson, McComb, Arcadia and Forest. Both motions passed 3‑0 (moved by William Bateson and seconded by Timothy Bechtol).
The approvals follow the county's participation in the state demolition programs and were presented as measures to move several long‑standing vacant or condemned properties toward remediation. The board did not identify any county funding commitments tied to these resolutions.
The commissioners' next formal consideration of county resolutions is scheduled for the upcoming Thursday meeting; no additional public hearing dates on the demolition items were announced at the session.
