After higher-than-expected quote, commissioners direct prosecutor to prepare bid solicitation for Olive Street remodel

Hancock County commissioners met at 1:30 p.m. with the Board of Elections, Veterans Services and Peterman & Associates after a remodel quote for the Olive Street building came in much higher than anticipated.
Commissioner Jeffrey Hunker opened the meeting explaining the purpose: the remodel quote exceeded the county’s original estimate. Board of Elections representatives said the layout and security needs are function-driven and that they saw no changes that would maintain required functionality. Veterans Services staff discussed a few minor change options. Adam Miller, representing county maintenance, said the department could build some interior walls rather than hiring a contractor to do all interior work, and that HVAC controls could be scheduled for later work if needed.
Commissioner William Bateson said that, because BG (the design reviewer) had already signed off on drawings, the county should put the project out to bid to see what proposals the market returns. The commissioners agreed and directed the prosecutor’s office to prepare a resolution for the next Tuesday meeting to solicit bids. The minutes record discussion of the bidding timeline and overall project schedule; no formal contract award was made on April 9.
Next steps: the prosecutor’s office will prepare a resolution to solicit bids and the commission will consider bids and next steps at subsequent meetings. County maintenance indicated it could perform some interior work to lower contract costs if the commissioners so direct during procurement.
