Gadsden City Council approves slate of contracts, easements and change orders

Gadsden City Council on May 5 approved a series of resolutions and motions to advance public works, facilities maintenance and utility projects.
Council suspended the rules and adopted a resolution awarding nuisance and abatement landscaping contracts across seven districts, a package the council said totals $190,000 for outsourced maintenance work. The council also approved awarding the facilities maintenance contract (bid 3642) to Bob Smith Construction for $509,965.75 to cover city building repairs and upkeep, from carpentry and HVAC to demolition, by voice vote.
The council adopted a final change order (number 2) with Hudak Construction for $4,931.21 to complete the amphitheater canopy project, then granted an easement to Alabama Power to serve the new Fire Station No. 8 on Rainbow Drive.
Members also authorized an agreement with the Gas and Water Works and Sewer Board to relocate utility facilities needed for the last phase of the South 11th Street resurfacing project so the work can proceed to completion.
President Beck recorded each item as carried on voice vote. Council members framed the package as routine project administration: “This is something we've done for several years now,” said Councilman Wilson during the contract discussions, urging the council to move forward to maintain city facilities and infrastructure.
The actions were recorded as council resolutions and change-order approvals; motions and voice votes were used for final adoption. The meeting transcript shows no roll-call tallies; votes were announced by the clerk as voice "ayes" and then entered as "motion carries."
