Melissa Chosewood and budget staff outlined the schedule: a budget public hearing on May 26 that will include a tentative millage rate, adoption of the budget on June 2, and millage-rate hearings on July 28, Aug. 4 and Aug. 25. Staff said budget materials and a QR code will be updated online so residents can access information and schedules.
A motion to transfer $300,000 from the hotel/motel fund to the general fund for operations passed during the meeting. Council members asked for an explanation of how hotel/motel funds are used and whether the proposed transfer was allowable. The finance administrator explained that hotel/motel revenues can be used for general-fund purposes and that the transfer is possible but required bank authorization because the prior authorized signer (Jodie Palmer) is no longer with the city; staff estimated the transfer could be completed in about two weeks once paperwork is processed.
“We can use that money in hotel/motel for anything general-fund related and do the transfer,” the finance administrator said when asked to explain the timing and process; staff also said they would update online materials to clarify use and contact information.
What’s next: The council set a budget work session for May 19 at 6 p.m. (there was earlier confusion over proposed dates), and the public hearing for the tentative millage rate is scheduled for May 26 ahead of the June 2 adoption vote.
