The Lawrence County Board of Commissioners on March 3 unanimously proclaimed March 2026 Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, honoring local services and residents served by the county's developmental disability program.
The proclamation, read aloud by Commissioner Quinton Copley, says Lawrence County Developmental Disability "serves over 600 individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in Lawrence County through services that cover the lifespan." The board voted to adopt the proclamation by voice vote.
Tanner Huff, introduced as a board member and program participant, accepted the proclamation and described long-term challenges accessing services. "It's been a fight that I have fought now for 34 years, and I'm gonna continue the rest of my life," Huff said, thanking county leaders for the recognition.
Commissioner Deanna Holliday praised Huff's service to the community and encouraged broader participation to support the disability community. "I have watched you for years, serve your DD community... and I admire your strength and your bravery," Holliday said.
Officials also highlighted DD Awareness Month events tied to the proclamation, including a chili fest and a May 17 fishing event for children with special needs; staff said fundraising activities support program services. The proclamation was signed by the commissioners and will be filed with county records.
The board did not attach additional policy actions to the proclamation; it was adopted as a recognition and public-awareness measure.
