Lawrence County proclaims April Child Abuse Prevention Month, honors student art winners and recognizes Public Health Week

The Lawrence County Commissioners on April 7 proclaimed April 2026 as Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month and recognized student winners of the county’s fourth annual child abuse prevention art contest.

Commissioner Deanna Holiday read a proclamation that cited recent county figures, saying “there were 1,056 reports of suspected child abuse and neglect in Lawrence County, with over 450 reports screened in for assessment or investigation, resulting in more than 100 confirmed victims” and that “approximately 66 children are currently in the custody of children's services.” The proclamation calls on residents and partners to increase awareness and prevention efforts. The board signed the document and moved outside the courthouse lawn for a group photo.

Missy Evans, director of the Lawrence County Department of Child and Human Services, introduced the contest and announced winners from grades 1–12 and that writing pieces from grades 6–8 are on display. Student presenters described the Tiger Wellness Network, a peer-led school initiative that aims to improve mental health and student engagement through ambassadors, community resource boards, monthly wellness themes and a kindness wall.

The commissioners also read a proclamation recognizing April 7–13, 2026 as National Public Health Week and emphasized local outreach. A health department representative said a public-health event will be held at the Ironton Farmers Market with partners offering services including free EKGs.

The proclamations were adopted by voice/roll call during the morning session. The meeting then moved to routine agenda business.
