Walled Lake board approves curriculum updates, digital‑safety tools and communications platform

To comply with recent dyslexia legislation (PA 164), the board approved the purchase of EL Education from Imagine Learning for $1,079,256, funded entirely by grant (31m) dollars. Trustee Siegler moved the measure and trustees voted 7–0 to approve it.
The board also approved GoGuardian admin and teacher licenses ($55,180 from 31‑a grant funds). Administration described GoGuardian as a tool to monitor district devices for safety‑related searches and provide a human‑review workflow before taking action. Trustee questions focused on how flagged searches are handled, whether teachers can close browser windows, and whether monitoring applies to district devices used at home; administration said human review and administrator follow‑up would occur and that district devices carry monitoring offsite as well.
ParentSquare was approved as the district’s unified communications platform (not to exceed $29,118.38 from 31‑a funds). Administrators said ParentSquare will replace SchoolMessenger for mass communications (it will not replace Skyward) and described planned onboarding for staff and families.
Bond and facilities motions approved included an amended furnishings package for the Geisler Educational Services Center ($926,962.19 from 2024 bond funds) to correct an invoicing error; installation of interactive LOU systems at elementary buildings ($143,690); replacement of a movable wall at Hickory Woods Elementary ($86,259.99 from 2019 bond funds); and a first round of technology for the Geisler ESC ($360,559 from 2024 bond funds).
The board also ratified a three‑year agreement with the Walled Lake Schools Administrators Association covering 2026–2029 that provides salary step adjustments and other compensation improvements for roughly 36 administrators; trustees voted to approve the ratified agreement after administration presented the negotiated terms.
