Miss Anderson, who presented the engineering item, asked the commission to approve Supplemental Agreement No. 1 with Southern Land Development to cover materials needed for a gas-line relocation, increasing the contract by $9,625.50. A commissioner said they drove past the job site three times the previous week and saw no workers at the project despite favorable weather, adding that the contractor had a long-running relationship with the county and should have proceeded under a small change order.
"This project's road closure affects four school zones," the commissioner said, expressing concern that parents were driving much longer routes to get children to school. "I think it's ridiculous that... a contractor that does this much work for the county could have trusted us enough to do a $10,000 change order and got this job done last week while the weather was cooperating." The chair seconded the motion to approve the change order.
Miss Anderson said the supplemental agreement increases the contract by $9,625.50 to patch the gas-line relocation and that the commission would consider the matter at the scheduled vote. Commissioners urged staff to follow up on the contractor's progress and to press for timely completion to minimize disruption to school traffic.
The commission moved and seconded the measure at conference; no roll-call vote tally was recorded in the conference transcript. The item will appear on the formal May 11 meeting agenda for final action.
