Commission discusses sanctuary ordinance outreach, law-enforcement oversight and county hospital option

Commissioners discussed ongoing work on a sanctuary ordinance and rapid-response strategies in the event of ICE activity. One commissioner said the sanctuary language has been drafted twice and recommended drafting a letter for the Board of Supervisors and preparing materials before inviting the sheriff or DA to a meeting.

"Maybe I will compose a letter that we can send to the board because we need to, you know, stay in the local governments," one commissioner said as the group considered next steps to raise concerns about ICE operations and local responses.

Members debated timing and logistics for inviting law-enforcement representatives; several said they preferred having a prepared agenda and translators available before holding a formal meeting with the sheriff. The commission agreed to solicit contact information for organizers and consider inviting a representative to brief the commission prior to public hearings.

In new-business discussion, a commissioner proposed that the county purchase the local hospital — potentially via a bond issue or a partnership with the university — after recent staffing and service disruptions were reported. Commissioners asked staff to put the hospital purchase idea on the next meeting agenda and to collect personal experiences or anecdotes that would support discussion.

Next steps: commissioners will draft a letter about sanctuary/rapid-response themes for circulation, identify a contact for the oversight-public-hearing organizers, and add the hospital-purchase discussion to the June agenda.
