The Humboldt County Human Rights Commission voted unanimously to adopt a standardized introductory script to use at listening sessions and agreed to form paired teams of commissioners to meet community organizations including the McKinleyville Family Resource Center, Data House and United Indian Health Services.
"I would like to move that we adopt the introductory sheet as proposed," a commissioner said before the commission approved the script with minor language edits.
The communications lead reported social-media posting rules and said the commission page has roughly 1,000 followers and that commissioners should forward community-appropriate items for posting. Commissioners also raised questions about artificial-intelligence-related activity in the county, and one commissioner highlighted a local data center on 11th Street and community concerns about electricity and water use.
Staff also reported three hotline calls in the review period (two from the jail) and summarized California guidance on service animals: staff may ask only two permissive questions — whether the animal is required because of a disability and what task the animal has been trained to perform; documentation is not required. Commissioners agreed staff should follow up with the local transit agency (HTA) on driver instructions.
Next steps: staff will update rosters, circulate the adopted script for final formatting, schedule outreach visits before the June meeting where possible, and follow up with HTA about training for drivers on service-animal interactions.
