Sam Gibson, an account manager with BrightView Landscaping, told the Atherton Park & Recreation Committee that BrightView staffs two full‑time employees at Holbrook Palmer Park who handle weekly or biweekly turf work, pruning, litter removal and on‑site irrigation repairs.
Gibson reviewed his monthly quality site assessment, highlighted the crew’s recent Arbor Day tree plantings and work on rose beds, and recommended reapplying decomposed granite (DG) in areas where water is pooling. "We might wanna talk about potentially doing redoing some DG at the park just because we can see how the water is, running over and, kinda pooling up," Gibson said, citing pathway runoff and stabilization needs.
Committee members raised detailed horticultural concerns including invasive ivy, root suckers in rose beds and dead limbs that they said need to be cut back to the trunk rather than trimmed. One committee member described seeing ivy that "is starting to suffocate" other plantings and urged root removal rather than surface cutting. Gibson said he had taken notes and would discuss the items with park staff, adding, "So we will be looking at the ivy and and tree branches, and and, I've made some notes, and and Will and I will discuss, shortly."
Gibson described BrightView’s on‑site approach to irrigation repairs: the crew can handle small fixes immediately while a dedicated irrigation technician is dispatched for more complex repairs. He also explained that the firm provides a monthly QSA (quality site assessment) to park staff documenting completed work and outstanding issues.
Why it matters: the QSA outlines near‑term maintenance needs and potential capital work (pathway DG resurfacing) that could affect user safety, erosion and long‑term maintenance costs. The committee asked staff to coordinate a walk‑through with BrightView to set priorities and to report back at the next meeting.
Next steps: staff and BrightView will schedule the walk‑through called for during the meeting and return with updates or an implementation plan at a future committee meeting.
