Lucas County approves multimillion-dollar road, demolition and roofing contracts

The Board of Lucas County Commissioners approved a package of capital and construction items from the county engineer and facilities offices.
County Engineer Mike Panuski presented several contract awards in the engineer’s consent agenda, including a $1,829,848 award to Gherkin Paving for the 2026 Ohio Public Works Commission resurfacing project and a $1,612,205 award to Vernon Nagle for the US 28 and Alban Road roundabout. Additional awards covered thin-overlay projects and roundabout work; Panuski also presented change orders and authorizations for right-of-way acquisition for the Hurler Road and Sylvania Avenue roundabout project.
Facilities Director Jeff Nowak presented multiple items including a low-bid contract of $3,769,946.80 to Advanced Demolition for excavation and demolition of the former Child Studies Institute building at 410 10th Street and a $1,303,000 overhead-roofing contract for roof replacement at the Lucas County corrections center (1622 Spears Avenue). Commissioners questioned prior roof performance on the corrections center and learned that manufacturer review suggested a missing vapor barrier between the concrete deck and insulation—a design issue rather than an installation warranty claim. Staff said the new roof system will include a vapor barrier and that investigators will cut into the roof in warmer weather to determine exact causes.
The board moved and approved the presented contracts and authorizations by roll call.
