Henderson County Commissioners approved acceptance of two United States Tennis Association grants April 15 to support construction of six USTA-certified tennis courts at the Berkeley Park Sports Complex. The County accepted a $200,000 USTA North Carolina "Tennis Venue Services" grant and a $5,000 "Raise the Net" grant; both awards will be applied to the tennis court construction and require budget amendments recognizing the grant revenue and associated contracted services line items.
County staff also requested and the Board approved a budget transfer from the General Fund to the Capital Projects Fund to cover Phase II improvements at Berkeley Park. That transfer, estimated at $34,800, will fund baseball field grading and demolition of an existing dugout; funding became available after laser-grading funds originally budgeted for Jackson Park were no longer required.
During the capital projects update, staff reported the sports complex progress: mass grading is complete, fine grading and underground infrastructure continue, soccer turf installation is complete, and installation of light bases was scheduled for early May with overall project completion anticipated in October 2026.
What happens next: Grant funds will be reimbursed upon project completion as required by the grant terms; staff will continue construction work and report progress to the Board with requested drone imagery.
