Law director: Children Are People lease was inappropriately executed; committee opens exploratory review

The Sumner County General Operations Committee discussed the status of the Children Are People building and an associated lease during its March 3 meeting after the law director said the lease had been inappropriately executed by a previous county mayor.
Law Director Eric Sitler told the committee he had spoken with the City of Gallatin attorney, described the current posture as exploratory and advised the county to operate under the existing lease while the matter is reviewed. Commissioners did not ratify or rescind the lease during the meeting.
Commissioner Chrissi Miller moved (seconded by Commissioner Mary Genung) to discuss the matter and the committee suspended the rules to hear from Megan Griffith of Sumner Prevention Coalition. Griffith said her organization had discussed the property with the Gallatin Volunteer Fire Department and Mayor Paige Brown and is willing to continue leases if the coalition is able to obtain the property.
The committee directed that the Children Are People building matter move to Old Business for follow-up; no binding decision on ownership or lease ratification was made at the March 3 meeting.
