Trustees add Historic Preservation Committee to code and adopt preservation plan to pursue CLG status

Town planning staff presented code amendments and a Historic Preservation Plan on May 6, explaining that adopting the ordinance and plan is intended to enable the town to pursue Certified Local Government (CLG) status.
The proposed code changes would incorporate the Historic Preservation Committee (HPC) in the municipal code and set aspirational qualifications for committee members, including backgrounds in construction, planning, law or preservation. Brian Schumacher told trustees that CLG designation would make the town eligible for grants from the State Historic Fund and provide technical assistance and training through the State Historic Preservation Office and the National Park Service.
The Historic Preservation Plan includes historical context, a timeline of local history, goals and objectives, and an initial implementation schedule outlining reconnaissance survey work and possible museum improvements. Staff recommended approval of the code amendment (ordinance 1414) and the plan; trustees approved the ordinance and then passed resolution 26‑R‑24 adopting the preservation plan, both by 6–0 votes.
Why it matters: CLG status creates a new channel for preservation funding and technical support and establishes a formal advisory committee to guide preservation priorities in downtown and across the community.
