Dozens of residents spoke during the public-comment period, citing local volunteer firefighting needs. Mike Gorham of 1116 Parkers Chapel Road urged greater funding for Portland-area volunteer companies; speakers from White House, Cottontown and Hendersonville offered similar appeals. The sign-in sheet submitted to the committee lists more than a dozen attendees who identified their concern as funding for volunteer fire departments.
Commission discussion followed the public comments. Commissioner Darrell Rogers moved to discuss the item, and Commissioner Ben Harris later moved (seconded by Commissioner Terry Wright) to approve and send the matter to the Legislative Committee. After a call for the question, the committee recorded the motion as approved and forwarded.
The action does not itself allocate funds; forwarding the request sends it to the Legislative Committee for policy and appropriation consideration. The committee did not adopt a specific funding amount or timetable at the March 3 meeting.
