Board schedules Jan. 31 work session to focus on facilities, budget priorities

The Beaufort County board on Jan. 22 approved a work-session agenda for Jan. 31 that centers on facilities planning, a brief budget kick-off and an executive session that will review architect selections and a proposed lobbyist/firm contract renewal.
Board Chair (speaker S1) presented the draft agenda and listed the executive-session topics: an employment matter, a personal ratification report, an adult education report, proposed selections of architects for professional design services at Bluffton High School and the Riverview Charter School gym addition, and renewal discussions related to the lobbyist/firm Burr Fulmer. Doctor Rodriguez (speaker S6) confirmed those items had been moved from the board session into the work session for coverage.
"It's a construction update," Doctor Rodriguez said, clarifying that the agenda item listed as a communications update was intended as a routine construction report rather than a communications briefing.
Several board members stressed the need for concise, non-promotional presentations so the board could focus on the facilities master plan and the budget priorities exercise. "I would like to request that Riverview... keep those pro forma agenda items efficient so that we can really focus on the budget priorities and the facilities master plan," a board member (speaker S5) said.
Members agreed to a format for future presentations that includes a short executive summary (no more than two pages), full content as needed, and a clear statement of what the presenters are asking of the board and expected trigger dates. The chair said he would circulate instructions and asked members to submit individual budget priorities in advance so staff could collate them before the work session: "I'll send out an email to all the board members asking them to do that, by, say, Wednesday of next week," the chair said.
The board also noted that Davante Singleton will present the Riverview report remotely via Zoom because he will be at a charter school conference; the chair said Singleton's presentation will focus on academic priorities and challenges rather than serve as a marketing video.
No substantive decisions were made at the Jan. 22 agenda-setting meeting; the January 31 work session will include the detailed presentations and any formal votes related to the Riverview item and other matters.
