EAST CENTRAL ISD hears update on $5 million estimate to expand High School No. 2 stadium

Mr. Thompson, speaking for EAST CENTRAL ISD staff, updated the Board of Trustees on a follow-up to last month's bond discussion and a design solution that would allow the second high school stadium to expand seating from roughly 1,000 to about 5,200.
Thompson said the work includes a larger seating footprint, added restroom fixtures to bring parity with the district's current stadium, and a site adjustment that moves the field about 12 feet east. He asked the board to authorize Mr. Toscano to negotiate final numbers in June so the district can take advantage of the current stage of construction.
—This is the time to do it,— Thompson told trustees, and estimated a not-to-exceed additional cost of —probably about $5,000,000.— He said the original project target was $184,000,000 and that two guaranteed-maximum-price contracts passed earlier yielded hard costs of about $178,000,000, producing a roughly $6,000,000 delta that staff believe can cover the additional scope.
Board members asked clarifying questions about the delta, the 12-foot shift to the east and whether the expanded design would sustain future growth. Thompson said staff is about 15% into the build-out on the site and that the timing is favorable to bundle the stadium additions into current work.
The trustees did not take a formal vote in the update; Thompson said staff would return with final negotiated numbers and a recommendation at a subsequent meeting.
