The Summit County personnel committee approved a new non‑bargaining classification and salary schedule for a medical laboratory technologist to be placed in the Medical Examiner’s Office and Executive's Human Resources staffing report. Chip Klepper, director of the Executive's Department of Human Resources, said the human resources commission approved the position as a Category 3, Grade 5 classification after comparing limited external comps.
Dr. Kohler of the Medical Examiner’s Office described the position’s duties: performing drug screens and confirmations coordination with a national laboratory, conducting carbon monoxide and alcohol testing, and managing slides sent to Akron Children’s Hospital for histology. She said the change is part of succession planning ahead of an anticipated retirement of the current toxicologist in 2027.
The committee then considered a promotion for Marla Gordon in the Sheriff’s Department. Kimberly Barton, director of administration for HR for the Sheriff, said Gordon would be promoted from account clerk to administrative specialist with supervisory responsibilities over jail registrars, inmate services and records. Barton said the requested starting wage is $30 per hour (the current referenced rate was $26.28 and the midpoint cited was $34). Both measures passed on voice votes after motions from council members.
The personnel committee closed after those actions.
