Cleburne County Board approves retirements, dozens of summer hires, state textbooks and two vehicles

The Cleburne County Board of Education met April 6 in Heflin and unanimously approved a slate of personnel actions, program hires, curriculum materials and district vehicle purchases.
In personnel business, the board accepted five resignations and retirements effective this summer, including Rebecca Smith, principal at CCES, whose retirement is effective July 1, 2026, and several support staff with June 1, 2026 effective dates. The board then approved multiple hiring lists to staff summer programs: 22 certified teachers for a K–5 Summer Learning program, five certified teachers for summer school at CCCTS, five summer student workers, staffing for the summer feeding program (10 hires listed), and two summer nurse assignments. All motions carried unanimously.
The board also approved a memorandum of agreement with the Alabama State Department of Education to extend Misty Ward’s position as Regional Literacy Specialist for one year (July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027). The board noted that the MOA extension will not constitute a resignation from the Cleburne County School System.
On student activities and curriculum, the board approved a field trip for CCHS students to attend the National Beta Convention in Nashville, Tenn., June 17–19, 2026, and adopted the Alabama State Board’s list of Social Studies textbook materials for grades K–12.
In procurement action, the board authorized purchase of two vehicles from Buster Miles Chevrolet: a 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe for $66,885.00 and a 2026 Chevrolet Trax LS for $21,510.52.
All votes recorded in the public minutes were unanimous. The board did not record extended debate in the public minutes on these items.
