Superintendent previews 'Caroline Reads' kickoff; residents press board on road safety and transparency

During public comment at the Jan. 13 meeting, Dr. Sarah Kalverick, superintendent of Caroline County Public Schools, described "Caroline Reads," a countywide literacy initiative running Dec. 2025–Dec. 2026. She said the Virginia Department of Education grant fully funds the program and invited supervisors to participate in the Feb. 7 kickoff in Bowling Green, noting activities, partner businesses and a 500-student cap for the event.
Two residents followed with invited remarks. Nicholas Brogan (Western District) called for clearer, plain-English accounting of how new development will fund infrastructure, pressed for competitive retention of deputies and urged transparency in budget decisions before approvals. Joseph James (Reedy Church District) presented safety concerns about passing zones and roadway markings on Route 30 between the Hanover and King William lines, cited a serious crash on Dec. 19, 2025, and asked that the Virginia Department of Transportation review the segment and consider narrowing passing zones or adjusting markings; he offered photographs to illustrate sight-line issues.
Board members acknowledged the requests and asked staff to record them for follow-up. The superintendent asked supervisors to publicize the kickoff to help meet the event cap.
