A legislative committee voted to report SB107 favorably after the bill’s sponsor said it would move pre-need funeral oversight and funding to the Alabama Board of Funeral Services from the Department of Insurance.
The presenter explained that, after a prior law transferred pre-need oversight away from the Department of Insurance, the department had temporarily supplemented the funeral board’s work. "So this is the bill that gets it in place so that they can have the money to in the, in the board so that they can go and regulate," the presenter said. The presenter asked the committee for a favorable report; members approved the request by voice vote.
The presenter also noted constituent complaints about funeral practices and framed the bill as giving the board the resources to better regulate. The transcript records on-the-floor comments that the change had been anticipated and that the board had previously been reviewed during the sunset process.
The committee’s favorable report advances SB107 to the next procedural stage; the transcript records a voice vote and does not provide a numeric tally.
