Board approves several student trips after lengthy debate over funding and bus safety

"What's on the cover is what we're approving," a staff member said while explaining that federal funds had been requested for hotels and registration fees while PTO and activity funds would cover other costs.
Safety and transportation drew strong scrutiny. Board members noted the district’s policy that yellow school buses should not be used for trips exceeding about five hours without additional safeguards and encouraged charter buses for lengthy national travel. Tanya McGee, principal of Warren Central Intermediate, told the board her school had raised funds and that the district request aimed mainly to cover transportation; she said the $1,600 figure was an estimate for bus-related costs.
After discussing charter vs. yellow-bus transport, funding splits and the need for clearer documentation, the board approved J-2 (a VIS request) and J-16 (WCI travel) with motions and voice votes. Multiple board members asked district staff to standardize travel requests to show the total trip cost, the district share and other sources so the board can see exactly what it is being asked to approve.
