Clinton superintendent highlights Governor's School acceptances, enrollment and new digital-learning pilot

Superintendent Doctor Johnson told the board the district received acceptance notices for two students to attend Governor's School East — Yemini Almon (Spanish) and Samaya Edwards (Natural Science) — and said the board agreed to cover their attendance fees. She said both students would present to the board after completing the Governor's School program.

Johnson also reviewed testing and accountability items: grades 3–8 EOG testing is scheduled within the last 10 days of school with additional retesting opportunities to allow remediation; she noted an RTA retest opportunity for some third graders and warned that a non-passing result can carry a reading designation on a student's record.

On enrollment and programs, Johnson reported district enrollment had been steady and showed 3,034 students as of the report. She celebrated multiple student and teacher recognitions (Dark Horse Fellows, teaching-fellow recipients, athletics and FFA honors) and previewed community partnerships, signings by athletes and special events such as Special Olympics and arts nights.

Johnson described a district pilot of Sydney, an AI-assisted system for recording walkthroughs and using digital materials to support teacher coaching and National Board portfolio work. "We're the first district in North Carolina to be utilized in Sydney," she said, and staff are seeking grant support to maintain access beyond the pilot year.

The board received the updates; no formal action was taken on the pilot or personnel recognitions at this meeting.
