Adams County approves Safe Routes to School agreement for Ricardo Flores Magone Academy crossing

Adams County commissioners unanimously approved a resolution on Aug. 13 to enter an intergovernmental agreement with Ricardo Flores Magone Academy for crossing improvements on Lowell Boulevard and 50th Avenue under the federal Safe Routes to School program.
County staff and Public Works Director Bridal Staley said the county received a $120,000 grant and is proposing to split the 20% local match with the school. The package before the Board includes design work to shorten crossing distances with curb bump-outs, installation of strobing beacons and pedestrian-activated warning signs to increase driver awareness of children crossing to reach the school.
Staley framed the approval as a relatively small but important step for pedestrian safety: "It's a milestone representative of the care and attention that our team is putting into sourcing creative solutions... and putting our pedestrians and the traveling public first," the director said.
Commissioners asked about how residents can report other hotspot needs; staff directed residents to SeeClickFix and said the county's regional transportation team will begin a comprehensive traffic-safety review this fall to identify high-priority sites for future projects.
The motion to approve the resolution was moved and seconded and passed unanimously.
What happens next: Public Works will advance design and ensure CDOT review of runoff impacts; the intergovernmental agreement outlines cost-sharing for the required local match and identifies the school as a project partner.
