Cass County planners set cleanup deadlines, assess fines and waive one $1,000 fine

On 1637 East 975 North (Lemon), staff reported the owner obtained a demolition permit and began removing structures; the commission set a reinspection for July 1 and gave the owner until the July 7 meeting to finish or face a $2,500 fine. Chair (speaker 1) confirmed the motion passed after a second.
At 2592 North 450 East, owner John Carson testified he pulled a permit and has largely boarded openings. Carson said he had been told he had a year to complete the work; commissioners voted to allow one year from his permit date for demolition, with a recheck scheduled.
For a case at 6096 West 900 North, staff said substantial work was underway but a $1,000 fine had already been assessed. Isaac Lashbrook (speaker 9) identified himself and described immediate plans to complete demolition. After reviewing the work, commissioners voted to waive the assessed $1,000 fine while keeping the possibility of re-assessment if cleanup is not finished, and scheduled reinspections.
Other motions approved or continued included reinspection dates and possible $1,000 assessments for properties at 7928 East Division Road, 30365 East 800 North (Crimmins), 7658 West US 24 (Myers) and a demo-permit followup for 7034 North Jefferson Street (Underwood). Several cases were cleared where staff confirmed work had been completed.
The commission repeatedly instructed staff to obtain contractor cleanup estimates when the cleanup costs exceeded $500 so the county can place the charge on property taxes if owners do not pay. Multiple motions passed by voice vote; no roll-call tallies were recorded in the transcript.
The meeting adjourned after the commission handled the remaining old-business items.
