County proclaims May as Corrections Employee Week; officials highlight rehabilitation programs

The Centre County Board of Commissioners adopted Proclamation 23 of 2026, proclaiming May 2026 as Corrections Employee Week and recognizing correctional staff for their work at the Centre County Correctional Facility and SCI Benner. The proclamation passed by voice vote.
A corrections official who spoke to the board praised staff for working with incarcerated people, including those with mental illness, and described the facility's programming. "Our staff work through challenges on a daily basis," the official said, noting programs aimed at rehabilitation. Commissioners highlighted two programs in particular: medication-assisted therapy, which a commissioner described as "game changing" and designed to continue treatment after release, and a central booking system that reduces police officer downtime for arraignments.
A corrections representative described the central booking model and said it allows officers to return to patrol more quickly by holding arrestees for scheduled arraignments and using video appearances. Commissioners said the county's correctional facility has a robust set of programs and has seen declining incarceration numbers locally. The board invited corrections staff to accept the proclamation and thanked them for their service.
