Neighbors press council to remove Rainier Trails pickleball lines; council opts to wait for new courts

Richard Gardine, speaking for Stonebrook neighbors, delivered a written statement saying residents are not opposed to pickleball but are troubled by the location of added lines at Rainier Trails Park, where some properties are as close as about 30 feet to play. Gardine said daily play beginning in May generates significant noise that has affected nearby residents since June and noted the parks board recently moved to remove the lines and that funding is available to resurface the court this year.
Councilmembers discussed the parks board recommendation during committee reports and in general debate. Several councilmembers said they preferred to wait until the new seven-court facility at Garrett Park is resurfaced and opened (work expected to start May 18) before removing lines at Rainier Trails to avoid temporarily displacing players and incurring removal costs. One councilmember noted the parks board recommendation but emphasized the need for a practical replacement location before removing existing striping.

Council asked staff to include a discussion of the issue at the next council meeting (May 18) after Garrett Park resurfacing progress is known. No formal vote to remove the lines was taken April 27.
