Committee backs bill to align student exit codes and prevent schools being credited with dropouts incorrectly

Sen. Abraham presented SB 290, a cleanup measure changing statutory language about assignment of student exit codes so that a district and the State Department of Education concur before altering a student’s exit code in the data system. He said the change addresses cases where a student is left coded as a '0' (dropped out) when transfer or other information later shows the student enrolled elsewhere, which unfairly affects school accountability metrics and funding.
Members asked for examples and clarification. Sponsor explained that an exit code of '0' signifies a dropout and that reconciling codes between districts and the state ensures accuracy for accountability and funding. The committee moved to report SB 290 favorably.
