Committee hears bill to rename Shoup Bay State Marine Park for Vic Fisher

Courtney Owen, staff to Representative Rhett Fields, presented House Bill 79 to the Senate Resources Committee, saying the bill would name Shoup Bay State Marine Park in Valdez for Vic Fisher in recognition of his role in the statehood movement, his participation in drafting the Alaska state constitution, and his work in rebuilding Valdez after the 1964 earthquake. "Because of these important contributions to the state, it feels appropriate to honor him by naming a marine state park after him," Owen said.
Committee members had no questions during the first hearing. The chair noted that public testimony was not opened for HB 79 at this session and the bill will be set aside and heard again soon, when public testimony will be taken.
No formal committee action was recorded beyond setting the bill aside for a future hearing with public testimony.
