Board votes to block distribution of AI-generated hearing recording over accuracy concerns

Citing poor transcription quality, the Sagadahoc Board of Assessment Review voted 4-0 to prohibit dissemination of an AI-generated verbal translation of a recent hearing, saying the file is not suitable for public or court use.
The Chair said the board reviewed an AI-generated recording of a recent hearing and found it inaccurate and unsuitable for court or public distribution, and moved that the AI verbal translation not be dispersed.
"The AI verbal translation is not to be dispersed to anyone based on concerns with the inaccuracy within its quality," the Chair stated when placing the motion. Board members said the recording mis-transcribed accents, produced amusing but incorrect word choices, and would not meet quasi‑judicial standards for evidentiary accuracy.
A motion to withhold distribution of the AI recording was made and carried 4-0. The Chair and other members agreed the county will not distribute the AI transcript as a public record until and unless its reliability improves; a copy has been retained for internal reference but members said it should not be released under FOIA in its current form.
Members agreed to ask the county tech staff to evaluate recording and transcription options and to report back at a follow-up housekeeping meeting.
