Superintendent outlines district goals, safety overhaul and progress on MSBA project

The Superintendent presented a year-in-review that emphasized four district goals — student learning, professional practice and two district-improvement goals — and said the district’s deeper-learning work is now embedded across school plans and professional development.

On safety and security, the Superintendent said the district has moved from sporadic drills to "multiple times a year" and described a comprehensive plan with six domains and task forces. Citing recent national events and consultation with outside experts, the district will repack its previous "4 Ls" protocol to align with the Run, Hide, Fight model and roll out updated training videos next fall. "Our kids are trained. Our teachers are trained. We know what to do," the Superintendent said when describing current preparedness.

Finance and capital planning staff told the committee they assembled two projects with the finance committee that should free approximately $515,000 in reallocated funds to pay for exterior and interior doors, new cameras, hardware, safety film and related upgrades over the next two years. A staff member described the funding as reallocation of previously authorized but unspent project funds rather than new bonding.

The Superintendent also described leadership-team development, the district evaluation process tied to state instruments and plans to provide an end-of-year evaluation update to the committee. He said the MSBA building project is "in great shape" and remains a core focus of district leadership.
