Committee directs staff to cost out update to 10-year facilities assessment; estimate could be $200K–$300K

At the end of the meeting Mr. Kelly moved that staff be directed to return with a cost estimate and timeline to update the Juneau School District facilities assessment (a roughly 230–250 page report). “I move that we direct staff to bring back to this committee a cost estimate on producing an updated assessment that we can review at our next meeting,” he said; the motion passed by unanimous consent with no objections.
Director Koch told the committee the last professional contract for the assessment about ten years ago was valued at roughly $100,000 and that, given the age of the prior study and current scope, a new professional services contract could “easily double” and might range from about $200,000 to $300,000. He also said the prior data are likely too old to reuse without substantial new field work.
Committee members clarified that the motion only directs staff to return with a cost and timeline estimate and does not commit the committee or the board to fund or proceed with the assessment. School-board members asked for clarity on the study’s purpose and stressed that the board and assembly should align on the expected scope before soliciting proposals. The committee also agreed staff will return with details about possible funding sources for the work.
