Caldwell trustees honor wrestling, cheer and History Day winners

The Caldwell School District Board of Trustees recognized a string of student achievements at its March 9 meeting, spotlighting the Caldwell High School wrestling and cheer teams and winners from the school’s National History Day program.
Coach Adam Freeman told the board the girls wrestling program has grown into a 44-member team and recorded multiple major results this season: a top-10 finish at a 100-team tournament in Reno, a top-10 finish at the Raleigh Lane tournament, victory in Idaho’s largest girls-only tournament and a district title among 37 teams. Freeman reported 10 state qualifiers, including one state champion and three other placers; he also said junior Anya Drenfeld broke the program’s single-season wins record (reported as 43) and set a single-season pins mark.
Freeman also summarized the boys’ season, saying 17 wrestlers qualified for state, five placed and the team produced a state champion who set school records for Tech Falls and career wins.
The board also heard from cheer coaches and parents after the squad’s trip to nationals in Las Vegas. Coach Eric Schol said Caldwell competed in the most advanced division in its bracket and finished second in its division, noting a 24-member floor that included eight boys and that the trip was the school’s first time reaching nationals.
Social studies department chair Brennan Wartz and teacher Caitlyn Ben Schulty presented the school’s National History Day showcase winners; students who placed at regionals and qualified for state were listed, and several students spoke briefly about project topics, including research on the Church Committee and the 1965 Delano grape strike.
Trustees praised the students’ accomplishments and discussed how extracurriculars and CTE pathways strengthen college, scholarship and career opportunities. The board’s recognition segment concluded with photographs and brief remarks from multiple student participants.
The board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for March 23, when trustees will revisit several information items.
