Boise outlines America 250 events and $30,000 community grant program

Boise City staff on Tuesday detailed the city’s America 250 programming — a local series of events and interpretive projects marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence — and announced $30,000 set aside for community grants.
Lindsay Moer and Jennifer Lindsay, co‑leads from the Office of Community Engagement, said the city is organizing community events (First Thursdays at Jump and “under the tree,” staged readings, trivia nights, exhibitions and tours), a K–12 student arts contest and a signature Fourth of July program that will include a pancake breakfast, a parade and an enhanced fireworks show with a Boise Philharmonic performance.
“July 4th marks the 250th anniversary…we’re taking it to the local level,” Lindsay Moer said, describing goals to commemorate, encourage reflection and broaden community engagement.
Staff said the America 250 grant application recently closed with 20 applicants. “We have also…allocated $30,000 to potential grant recipients,” staff said; a review panel led by McKenzie will meet in mid‑February and decisions are expected in early March. Grant‑funded community events and projects are expected to run from April through September.
The student arts contest invites K–12 submissions in visual, written and performance categories; the deadline cited by staff is March 12. Staff also described partnerships with local organizations including Boise State Public Radio, Boise State University, Idaho Public Television and the Wasmuth Center for community programming and outreach.
