Town of Lennox prepares DEC open-space grant for Lewis Point conservation

Town of Lennox officials told the county board they will apply for a New York State DEC open-space grant (up to $3.5 million) to acquire Lewis Point, a peninsula with about 2,500 feet of shoreline; the property owner agreed to hold it off-market through Feb. 15, 2027 while the town and county plan a potential purchase.
Supervisor Megan told the Madison County Board of Supervisors that the town of Lennox approved a gender-based violence workplace policy needed to pursue a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation open-space grant to conserve Lewis Point on Onondaga Lake.
Megan said the DEC Open Space grant could provide up to $3.5 million per applicant without a local match and that the current property owner has agreed to hold the 2,500-foot shoreline property off the market until Feb. 15, 2027 while the town coordinates with county planning, DEC, the Onondaga Lake association and the CNY Land Trust.
The town has been working with county planning staff and local conservation partners on the early phases of a potential acquisition. The board asked for letters of support and noted the grant deadline of April 15 is approaching.
No formal county expenditure or commitment was adopted at the meeting; Megan requested ongoing support from county officials and residents as the town prepares the grant application.
If funded, the acquisition would protect shoreline on Onondaga Lake and would be advanced in coordination with state and local conservation organizations.
