Schley County approves resurfacing of Mt. Zion Road, prioritizes patching work and vehicle repair

Schley County commissioners approved resurfacing 8/10ths of a mile of Mt. Zion Road and authorized repair work and maintenance priorities for county roads during their Aug. 12 meeting.
County Manager Douglas Jamieson presented two options for Mt. Zion Road: complete resurfacing of 0.8 mile or targeted hot-patching of the worst areas. After discussion about costs and remaining unpaved portions, Commissioner Jones moved to resurface the 8/10ths of a mile; Commissioner Harrison seconded and the motion passed with all in favor.
The board also discussed Candy Cane Lane, where Jamieson said engineer estimates for full resurfacing were high. Chairman Clark and staff suggested using LMIG funds to patch multiple roads rather than completely resurfacing a single road. Jamieson recommended requesting a DOT traffic counter to determine relative travel volumes on Candy Cane Lane and Heath Road to inform prioritization; Art Barfield said Mt. Zion should be repaired first.
Separately, the road department’s 2016 Chevrolet 2500 needs a transmission repair. Rebuilding the transmission would cost $5,500 versus more than $6,500 for a remanufactured replacement; Vice Chairman Belcher recommended rebuilding and Commissioner Barineau moved to have the transmission rebuilt for $5,500, a motion seconded by Commissioner Jones and approved by the board.
Public works updates included a report from Art Barfield listing 5,094,000 gallons of monthly water usage, 741 meters read, 231,740 gallons sold to Andersonville, two new water services, several water-main repairs, and completion of 104 locates for 811 calls. The minutes also list ongoing county maintenance projects and available fund balances including SPLOST and LMIG.
Next steps: staff will proceed with resurfacing the designated stretch of Mt. Zion Road, pursue traffic-count data for prioritization on other roads, and rebuild the road-department truck transmission as approved.
