County discusses $355,000 resurfacing estimate for Mt. Zion; contractor proposes $88,850 targeted repair

Douglas Jamieson told the Schley County Board on July 8 that an engineer provided a rough estimate to resurface the paved portion of Mt. Zion at about $355,000 per eight-tenths of a mile.
Jamieson said he had spoken with Sumter Asphalt about addressing the worst stretch of road (approximately 1,500 feet by 26 feet). He described Sumter Asphalt—s proposed method: power broom cleaning, application of hot emulsion tack, haul-and-pave a 1-inch asphalt leveling course over the area, then a 1.5-inch hot asphalt topping course. Sumter Asphalt's cost for that scope was presented as $88,850.
Commissioner Harrison expressed concern about how long patch work would last. Chairman Clark recommended obtaining bids from other companies for the same scope of work to compare prices.
No formal contract award or motion to proceed was made at the meeting; the board requested additional bids before making a decision.
