Schley County commissioners voted Aug. 12 to set the 2025–26 millage rate at 13.094 mills, a change the county’s tax assessor said was necessary to balance the approved budget.
Tax Assessor Joe Wright told the board that, because of issues with the assessor’s software, the county would need to increase the rate by 2.54 mills to align revenues with the approved 2025–2026 budget. Wright said that, based on current assessments and adjustments, property tax bills in Schley County could increase about 7%.
Commissioner Barineau moved to set the millage rate at 13.094; Vice Chairman Belcher seconded the motion and “all were in favor,” according to the meeting minutes. The motion was adopted at the Aug. 12 meeting.
The board discussed whether the Schley County School Board might reduce its own millage to mitigate the impact on taxpayers, but the minutes do not record a school board decision or commitment. The county did not publish a breakdown of how the change would affect individual property bills or the number of taxpayers affected.
Next steps: the adopted millage rate will be applied for the 2025–2026 tax year; the minutes do not record any further hearings or appeals related to the county rate on Aug. 12.
