Newton awards $261,164 Center Street widening contract to Staker Parsons

The Newton Town Council voted April 8 to accept Staker Parsons’ low bid of $261,164 to widen Center Street from Main Street to 100 South, following Forsgren Associates’ recommendation.
Jacob Ames of Forsgren Associates presented a bid tabulation showing six bidders, four of whom met the requirements. "Forsgren and Associates recommends going with the low bid from Staker Parsons for $261,164," Ames told the council. Council members discussed that a CCCOG grant would fund $205,000 of the project and that the town must provide an 8% match; engineering fees can be counted toward the match. Council also discussed that removing parking and sidewalk elements would require rebidding the work.
The town noted a 120‑day construction timeline and an obligation to maintain access to the fire station during construction. The council authorized staff to notify Staker Parsons of the award and to schedule a preconstruction meeting.
Motion and vote: Jed Woodward moved to accept the low bid from Staker Parsons; Anzl Rhodes seconded. All Newton town council members approved the motion.
