Commission schedules Leading Women event and Athena awards, seeks sponsors and volunteers

The Leading Women event is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, 2026 at the Maryland Golf and Country Club. A review committee of Pam McHugh, Diane Sengstacke, Karen Chizmar and Crystal Clark will select the Leading Woman of the Past from submitted candidates; the speaker for the event will be Vicki Bands, the 2025 Athena winner and director of community outreach and health improvement for the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Hospital. Coordinator Meg Deem will circulate a sponsorship flyer to board members and requested help identifying sponsors.
Commission members discussed logistics: centerpieces and wrist corsages could be prepared by North Harford High School or Harford Technical High School (Katie Novotny to follow up); Pam McHugh and the selection committee will review applications in February. Deem reported 22 applications for Leading Women (one 7–8 grade, two 9–10 grade and 19 for 11–12 grade) and said invitations will be sent to applicants and their families.
Members also discussed the Athena awards event on March 5, 2026 at the APGFCU Arena Center at Harford Community College and noted Angela Rose is a nominee. For fall 2026 the commission began planning a Women’s Resource Fair and suggested the Epicenter as a venue and outreach to local organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, SARC and others to host informational tables.
The commission finalized a Community Conversations speaker schedule for Feb.–June, covering housing, nonprofit leadership, local history, community groups and small businesses. Members did not take formal votes on event funding at the meeting; plans and requests for sponsors and volunteers were made for follow-up outside the meeting.
