The House adopted House Resolution 210 to honor Kumu Earl Kawaa for his work preserving Hawaiian language and culture and mentoring new generations. Representative Martin moved adoption and described Kawaa’s long career teaching cultural practices, building hale and working with community organizations; Representative Hussey seconded the motion and the resolution carried on a voice vote.
Representative Martin told colleagues that Kawaa has taught widely through Keiki-o-ka-Aina and Kamehameha Schools and has worked with families and youth across Oʻahu and Molokai, noting his roles as a traditional hale builder, cultural specialist and trainer of future alakaʻi. Martin said Kawaa’s classes “strengthen family bonds and communication” and highlighted his service including time in the Molokai National Guard and community development work.
Members applauded as Martin introduced supporters and regional alakaʻi in the gallery; the chair then called a brief recess to allow members to meet and congratulate the honorees and for a certificate and lei presentation.
No formal votes on policy or appropriations were taken as part of the floor presentation; the resolution recognizes Kawaa’s community contributions and cultural leadership.
