Walton County Board of Education honors students and volunteers, adopts routine consent items unanimously

The Walton County Board of Education on March X recognized students, community volunteers and staff across the district and approved several routine consent items unanimously.

Superintendent Underwood opened the meeting with a brief overview and a series of recognitions that highlighted recent student and community achievements. "You can see there's a lot of great things going on in our schools," Underwood said, noting the board's focus "on taking care of your children and protecting your money." The board also presented certificates and photos to board members and award recipients.

Student recognitions included Monroe Elementary's Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team, which placed second at the district competition and advanced to regional competition, and Sharon Elementary's first top-three finish in nearly a decade. School leaders named students and coaches and invited awardees to the front for photographs.

The board and district honored community volunteers and families with the Walton Impact Award across the Monroe cluster. Presenters described volunteer work ranging from donated equipment and playground improvements to sustained PTO fundraising; one presenter said a PTO's revenue had grown to nearly $11,000 to support students and staff.

District leaders also presented the March Weil Walton employee recognition to Sharon Elementary bookkeeper Blundine Ivy, citing three decades of service. Principal Beth Morgan was quoted in the nomination letter saying Ivy is "truly the heartbeat of our school."

Board member Ned Butler read the Walton County Board of Education code of ethics, which lays out governance responsibilities, the superintendent's delegated day-to-day authority, confidentiality expectations for executive sessions and procedures for handling alleged ethics violations, including a two-thirds vote requirement for hearings and an appeal right to the State Board of Education.

On procedural business, the board approved the proposed agenda and moved through the consent agendas. The board consent agenda included approval of minutes from Feb. 10, 2026; an updated student code of conduct for 2026 (noted as a first reading to lay on the table for 30 days); and policy adoptions related to social media use and honor rolls/graduates. The superintendent's consent items approved by the board were the February 2026 finance report and personnel recommendations for March 2026. Each motion on the record was adopted by a 7–0 vote.

There were no visitor comments recorded for the meeting. After brief board remarks of appreciation for staff and volunteers, a motion to adjourn passed 7–0 and the meeting ended.

Next steps: the student code of conduct was presented as a first reading and is scheduled to be laid on the table for 30 days before further action.
