Cora Lisa Davis, the mother of Dedrick Lee Wooding, described her son as "very outgoing" and "a big comic" and urged anyone with information about the Aug. 4, 2023 shooting on I-40 westbound to come forward.
"If anybody knows anything about that night, on I-40, if anybody would like to share anything, just to bring us closure," Davis said in an interview, asking that tips could be anonymous if necessary. She said the family is still searching for answers three years after the killing.
Officials said officers responded to an August 2023 crash and vehicle fire on I-40 westbound between Patterson Street and Wendover Avenue and located a Honda Accord that had already been extinguished. "When they started looking at the vehicle they located the deceased, Mr. Dedrick Wooding," a spokesperson said, adding that Wooding had been shot multiple times.
Investigators reported finding debris that led them to believe an Infiniti QX60 may have been involved either in the crash or the shooting. "We just need that person to come forward and tell their side of what happened that night," the spokesperson said, noting no witnesses remained on scene who could identify the shooter.
Davis described the personal toll on the family. She said Wooding had two brothers and a son, who was about to turn 13 the day after his father was killed. "His legacy was his son," she said. "He really looked up to his son."
Davis and the family said the sudden, violent loss left them with many unanswered questions about motive and who was responsible. "You kind of want it to be over, but you, it'll never be over, because you don't know who did it or why they did it," she said.
Authorities reiterated their request for information and said tips can be submitted anonymously. The family described cooperation with investigators as critical both to solving the case and to allowing the family to grieve. There was no mention in the interview of an arrest or of any formal charges related to the shooting.
Authorities did not provide additional identifying information about a suspect, a motive, or the exact sequence that led to the shooting beyond what appears above. The investigation into Wooding's death remains open; investigators continue to seek witnesses or tips.
