Board President Dan Flores announced and the board approved an emergency resolution on Oct. 16 to authorize contracts for remediation and roof repairs at 325 Hermosa Street after heavy rains caused structural damage.
Superintendent Dr. Miranda told the board that recent storms led to a “roof essentially collapsed” at the district building and that the county had approved expedited contracting so repairs could begin immediately. The item was added to the agenda as an emergency under board bylaw 9323.2 and Government Code section 54956.5; Board Member Israel Fuentes moved to place the item on the agenda and Board Member Pat Haro seconded the motion, which passed on a roll-call vote of the members present.
After the emergency finding passed, the board moved to adopt Resolution 2625, authorizing staff to enter contracts for remediation and roof repair. The motion to approve the resolution was moved by Fuentes and seconded by Haro; Miss Medina recorded the roll-call votes (Mr. Flores—yes; Mrs. Flores—yes; Mr. Fuentes—yes; Mrs. Haro—yes; Mr. Ibara—yes; Mrs. Sandival—yes). The resolution carried and staff may proceed with contracting to restore the facility and ensure staff and student safety.
The board discussed the need to shorten procurement timelines to protect building occupants and thanked staff for quickly coordinating with county officials. No contract amounts or vendors were read into the public record at the meeting; the resolution authorizes staff to enter contracts consistent with emergency procurement rules. The board did not set a public completion date during the meeting.
The board’s action follows the district’s routine for emergency items laid out in board bylaw 9323.2 and the cited state emergency-meeting statutes.
